Free Will자유의지

Seven names we’re taught to be ashamed of. Every one of them began as an instinct that pushed a person forward — and every one of them curdles, at some point, into something that harms someone else. What follows is that turn, drawn seven times, plus the heart that ties them back together.

Pridepen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Pride (교만)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

A boot pressed down on another’s throat, just to stand a little taller — that’s pride’s darkest face. But pride is also the door that opens onto a world too small to stay in. This form keeps its back to the viewer, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes but its own — open arms, clawed fingertips, a halo worn for no one else. A kingdom of one.

Slothpen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Sloth (나태)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

A body left to rot in its own bed, too still to notice it’s already dying. But sloth is also the stillness your body begs for when no one else will grant it — until the stillness stops being rest and becomes a grave you dug yourself. Wings that lift nothing; small spheres orbiting the head, a tiny universe that has stopped going anywhere.

Gluttonypen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Gluttony (폭식)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

A mouth that keeps tearing long after the meat is gone. Gluttony is also the map that first drew the shape of pleasure — the trouble is the map runs out, and the hunger never learns the difference. This form curls in on itself, arms wrapped tight, and where its stomach should be, a second mouth has opened — just as many teeth, just as hungry.

Envypen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Envy (질투)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

A smile that turns to teeth the moment someone else wins. But envy is also a mirror you didn’t ask for, one that shows you exactly where you stand. Drawn as two beings, not one, bound by a rope neither can shed — one wears a beast’s skull, the other a thin, grieving face. The rope keeps them from ever looking away from each other.

Wrathpen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Wrath (분노)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

Knuckles split open before the anger even has a name — that’s wrath’s first face. But wrath is also the only honest reply to what was taken from you. This form isn’t caught mid-explosion; it’s caught the instant before, wire wound tight around a chest and a fist that’s barely still a fist. The ink already scattered outside its body is already leaking out.

Greedpen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Greed (탐욕)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

The ember that first taught you to want something at all — before it becomes the hand that never lets go. Not a single body but a multiplication: the same hand, the same face, repeated outward without end. Fill it and it only grows one more hand, identical to the last. A single ring encircles them all, showing where that wanting actually leads — back into itself.

Lustpen, tattoo ink · 8 × 11 in · 2024Lust (색욕)펜, 타투 잉크 · 8 × 11 in · 2024

A hunger that doesn’t care whose body it consumes to feed itself. But lust is also love, still learning where it ends and where it begins — the trouble is love forgets where it was supposed to stop. One unbroken line: hair and limbs coiling like a serpent until they meet their own tail. A hunger with nowhere left to go but back into itself.

These seven names — pride, greed, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth — are usually treated as purely negative. But each one began as something that pushed a person forward, before curdling into something that harms someone else. This series draws that turn: seven bodies caught at the exact moment light becomes shadow inside the same skin. Lift your head, and what you find isn’t someone else — it’s your own reflection. We are imperfect. And still, somehow, beautiful.

For over twenty years, I don’t think I was ever truly comfortable — even though I had every reason to be. I grew up wanting for nothing, yet I carried an unexplained weight in my chest for as long as I can remember. It took years just to notice that weight, and years more to understand where it came from: everything I had was built on my parents’ foundation, not my own, and one question pressed down on me constantly — am I actually worth anything?

That fear, paired with a compulsive, competitive hunger to never fall behind anyone, pushed me to drive myself relentlessly — physically, mentally, financially — until, piece by piece, I built a life that was finally mine to claim. The old weight has mostly lifted. For the first time, I’m living on my own foundation instead of my parents’, and for the first time, I felt something like real comfort.

But that comfort was so sweet it frightened me — I could feel it starting to loosen the grip that kept me moving forward. And something new has moved into the space the old weight left behind — an emptiness I don’t yet understand. This piece is my first attempt to give that emptiness a shape I can actually look at.

Large charcoal drawing of overlapping faces of different ages and genders, from an infant to an elderly woman, each in a different stage of grief.
Coexisting Emotioncharcoal, conté · 37 × 25 in · 2022Coexisting Emotion (공존하는 감정)목탄, 콩테 · 37 × 25 in · 2022

Portrays the five stages of grief in the Kübler-Ross model — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Each face is drawn at a different age and gender, to show these emotions can occur at any age. Both the infant, bottom left, and the old woman, top right, wear the fifth stage: acceptance. From a newborn to a woman near death, the same feeling.

Charcoal and a fading technique tie the emotions together as simultaneous rather than sequential. Grief is sold to us as a queue you move through and leave behind. It isn’t. All five are in the room at once, in the same person, on the same day.

Leaking Consumptionpencil · 20 × 15 in · 2022Leaking Consumption (새는 소비)연필 · 20 × 15 in · 2022

A mart, drawn in pencil. People spend heavily inside places like this — on items never used, food never eaten. The drawing is filled with receipts to show how money leaks out through holes people don’t track. An argument for noticing the sources of consumption we’d rather not look at.

Reinterpreted with the characters later described in the famous Pietà statue — carrying the argument that history or myth can be altered in the process of being known.

Originally, the Pietà represents sorrow. In this parody, the future humanity I created occupies the place where Jesus was meant to be. The Pietà figure is the image of humanity we already knew; the pre-human held in her arms is not. The gesture reads as the creation of a new being — as if the existing human had disappeared, and given birth instead.

An imagined end-point: a new human figure designed for survival in an environment polluted by modern and future humans, reborn with a bizarre appearance out of line with current aesthetic standards. A new caste, the “Queen,” regulates an acid-filled earth — removing and redistributing acid so the population can keep multiplying. Individuals outside the symbiotic relationship do not survive.

Set against posthumanism and transhumanism, a character designed with a dystopian image — the human race reborn after an advanced mechanical development era. Modern traits remain, but exaggerated toward the unhealthy: turtle necks, bulging bellies, fingers and arms deformed and elongated for a life spent at a keyboard. Sensory organs have deteriorated for lack of use.

Built from scrap metal and waste through upcycling, aimed at the present problem, without pretending to predict the future it depicts.

About소개

Excretion is what everything alive does. You take in what you need, and what is left has to leave the body. It looks unclean. It is also completely ordinary — something anything alive has to do, regularly, or it dies.

I call my work excrement. That isn’t me putting it down. It is what grew out of everything I took in: the thoughts I carry, the ideas I wanted to understand, the experiences good and bad that fed me. A caterpillar leaves the shell of the chrysalis behind when it turns into something else. I leave residue too. Being an artist means mine can go on a wall.

People change for all kinds of reasons — evolution, degeneration, or plain adaptation. What every change has in common is a moment of contact: a deprivation in infancy, a love in childhood, a question in adulthood that won’t leave you alone. Most often we change when something we were certain of collapses. The crack is disorienting, and it is also the only way out of the old skin.

What I look for is the contradiction inside what everyone agrees is beautiful — and the fact that its root is usually nothing nobler than appetite. And the reverse: the legitimacy, even the purity, of what people would rather not look at. Showing the uncomfortable thing is how we get to the real one. When something I was sure of turns out to be wrong, or when a settled idea can be entered from a direction nobody uses, that is art doing the only job I think it has.

I want to lodge one thought in a group of people deep enough that it keeps coming back — not a picture they liked, but a small crack that interrupts the ordinary flow of a day, somewhere, later.

Maybe all of it is a memoir I’ll be writing for the rest of my life. Or a diary written from inside a cell.
